2026 marks a significant milestone for the tribology community. Not only is it the 35th Mission of Tribology, but it also celebrates 60 years since the publication of the landmark Jost Report, a foundational moment that helped define the field as we know it today.

This free-to-attend engineering competition brings together UK researchers dedicated to advancing our understanding of friction, wear and lubrication. As in its origins, when the first Mission of Tribology coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Jost Report, the event continues to connect generations of researchers and ideas.

Throughout the day, we will celebrate the past, present and future of tribology. We will reflect on the history of the Mission and recognise past participants and winners, explore how the discipline has diversified and evolved, and look ahead to emerging directions including digitalisation, AI and machine learning.

Expect a dynamic programme of presentations, posters, discussions and networking, as emerging researchers share their latest work, ideas and ambitions. The spotlight remains firmly on the next generation, whose creativity and experimental thinking are as important as the results they present.

As part of IMechE’s Tribology Day, all registered participants will be automatically registered attend the 2026 Donald Julius Groen Prize Lecture, taking place immediately after the competition.
